Mental Ability opens the paper — figures and diagrams only. Nothing to read, nothing to memorise.
The JNV Selection Test is 80 questions in two hours. The first twenty are the Mental Ability Test: non-verbal, figure-based, and the only part of the paper that rewards a trained eye rather than a stocked memory. They also sit inside the section that breaks a tie.
For Class 5 students applying for Class 6 admission to a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya — 665 of them, in 27 states and 8 union territories, where education, board and lodging are free.
The test runs 11:30 to 1:30 as a single booklet, with a bell every thirty minutes. A child may move between sections freely — the times below are what NVS suggests, not a lock.

Mental Ability is the first twenty questions, not the whole of Section 1. The other twenty in that section are Environmental Studies — fifteen multiple-choice questions and one passage followed by five more, drawn from the natural world, the human body, science in daily life and social surroundings. We train the first twenty. We do not sell you EVS, which school and home already cover.
That smaller share still decides more than its size suggests. Section 1 carries the single largest block of marks, its 14-mark minimum must be cleared on its own, and when two children finish level it is Mental Ability and EVS that is compared first.
NVS divides them into five parts of four. Every question is a figure. Nothing has to be read, and nothing has to be recalled — which is exactly why a child from a village school starts level with a child from a city one.

Three habits carry most of these twenty marks:
None of this is talent. It is the same handful of moves, met often enough that a ten-year-old stops having to think about them.
Each one comes straight from how NVS words the part itself.
Pattern Completion asks for the figure that fits the missing part without changing the direction — the prospectus says so in the directions themselves. A child who mentally rotates an option until it fits will always find one that does, and it will be the wrong one. The piece goes in as printed or it does not go in.
Part IV tests both in one run of four questions, which is what makes it slippery. A mirror image flips left and right. A water image flips top and bottom. Children who learn only “the mirror one” get half of this part wrong and never find out which half.
In the last four questions the problem figure is hidden inside one of the answer figures — hidden, not resized and not tilted. A shape that is nearly right but sits at a different angle is the distractor, placed there for the child who is matching on impression rather than checking.

Twenty questions of eighty, worth 25 marks of 100. It shares Section 1 with Environmental Studies — 20 questions each, 25 marks each, 60 minutes for the two together. It is worth more than a quarter in practice, though: Section 1 is the largest block of marks in the paper, its 14-mark minimum has to be cleared on its own, and when two children finish on the same total it is the Mental Ability and EVS score that separates them first.

No. Every correct answer is worth 1.25 marks and nothing is taken away for a wrong one, so there is no reason to leave a question blank. What does matter is the minimum in each section — 14 marks in Mental Ability and EVS together, 7 in Arithmetic and 7 in Language. A child has to clear all three.

The JNV Selection Test is offered state by state: Hindi and English everywhere, plus the regional languages your own state lists. You choose yours on the application form, and NVS is explicit that changing it afterwards is not possible — so choose it carefully. The Mental Ability questions are the one part where it matters least, because they are figures rather than sentences.
